The design translates your photo into a black-and-white "halftone" image, that can be engraved in glass. White is engraved and opaque, whereas black is not engraved and transparent. Translating photo into design is all about finding the right balance between engraving (white) and transparency (black). After all, we want both: the details of the photo (e.g., hair, etc.) and a radiant light image.
The dot density (resolution) of a portrait is always lower than that of a photo. Therefore, it's crucial to choose a suitable photo. Read it here.
The design is the transition from your photo to the portrait. You will receive it free of charge for approval. The photo will be cropped if necessary to create a close-up This ensures that the details are more visible. The background is also blurred or removed. Please specify your design preferences in the comments section of the order form.

Not every photo is suitable for engraving. The following characteristics are important:
1. The photo is well exposed and sharp.
2. The photo is at least 100KB and 800x1000 pixels in size . If the cropped image on 100% (without zoom) is still sharp, then the photo is suitable. In general, a close-up a better portrait. Why this is so, you can read in: What is a portrait in glass?
Please do not send photos taken or forwarded via WhatsApp, Facebook, etc.. Social media apps subconsciously resize your photo, leaving insufficient detail for a portrait. Send the original photo. as big as possible up and do not reduce/compress it.
If you don't have the original, you may have a printed photo or negative that you can scan at high resolution (300 dpi or higher). I can also do this for you. You will receive the negative/photo back with the portrait. Portret in Glas is not responsible for loss or damage of photos or negatives in the mail.
Is your photo unsuitable according to the Photo Tips? If possible, take a replacement photo. You can also send us your chosen photo for review. Sometimes the solution lies in editing the photo with software. I'm happy to try to make it suitable for a portrait. This does depend on the photographic quality of the photo. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Before ordering, it's advisable to consider the portrait's placement in your home. It requires good lighting. This can influence the color choice (clear or amber), the options (e.g., LED lighting), or whether you opt for customization.
If the portrait is well-lit, it will shine from afar. From about 1-1.5 meters, the dots that make up the portrait merge into a single image. Because it's a backlit image, it's more visible from a distance than a regular photo.
When we say the portrait should be well-lit, we're actually talking about contrast. This means the difference between the engraved (white) and the non-engraved (transparent) image should be optimal; the white should be as light as possible and the transparent image as dark as possible. This is achieved by placing the portrait in a bright spot against a plain, relatively dark background (e.g., a garden, wall, or fence).
In short, the placement you choose for your portrait is important! Daylight is and remains the best way to illuminate a portrait. If you don't want or can't place it near a window, you can, for example, shine a spotlight on the portrait and place it against a dark wall. You can also opt for LEDs in the holder (Options on the Home page).
Finally, it's good to know that a coloured portrait (Amber) has higher contrast and is therefore more visible against a light background (e.g., a blue sky or a white wall). LED lighting is a good way to boost contrast, especially with Clear portraits.

Portrait in Glass creates its own LED lighting in the holder. For optimal lighting, Portrait in Glass uses high-quality COB LEDs (COB stands for Chip On Board). The tightly spaced COB-leds create an even illumination of the portrait. The standard size COB LED portrait has an additional cost of €50, including a cord/switch and a 12V adapter (black).
The glass is thick and can withstand minor impacts, but it is still glass and therefore fragile. If the portrait falls or is carelessly removed from its holder, it can be damaged. The engraving has been treated with a coating This makes it less likely to get dirty and easier to clean. Clean by hand only, using a non-aggressive or non-acidic soap-based product and a lint-free cloth.
Because the glass portrait is a personal product, it cannot be returned. The portrait is a one-of-a-kind piece, crafted with the utmost care to your specifications. I will guide you through the process as needed to ensure the portrait is as successful as possible. Please ask any questions you may have on the order form, and I will answer them as soon as possible. It is the buyer's responsibility to familiarize themselves with the product. The seller acts in good faith to inform you of the nature of the product but cannot accept any liability if the delivered product does not meet your expectations. You can read more about this in the terms and conditions.
